Smoke alarm installation, testing, and upgrades

Australian Government Smoke Alarm Regulations:

Location – Smoke Alarms must be installed on each storey, in each bedroom, and in hallways connecting bedrooms
  • Hardwired Smoke Alarms – connected to the mains power supply with a backup battery
  • Interconnected – all Smoke Alarms must be interconnected. So, if one alarm is activated, all alarms are activated.
  • Smoke Alarms must be photoelectric and comply with AS3786-2014
  • Smoke Alarms must be less than 10 years old
  • If a Smoke Alarm fails to test, it must be replaced
    • Requirements as a landlord
      From January 1 2022, at the commencement of a new lease or lease renewal, you must ensure your dwelling/unit meets the requirement of the domestic smoke alarm legislation
